Tournament Statistics
The league title is UTSA’s fourth overall and second back-to-back since winning the Southland in 2011-12. The championship also extended the team’s 12-year streak in 14 seasons of finishing fourth or better at a conference tournament.
Gonzalez, who was edged by a stroke out of the individual medal by teammate Julie Houston last year, became the school’s fifth medalist and was never once unseated from first throughout the tournament. The sophomore went into the final round up by three strokes and posted her third-straight sub-par day at -1 under 71 to comfortably take the crown by five strokes. Gonzalez registered a 207 (69-67-71) as runner-up Kerri Parks of Marshall inked a 4-under 212 (73-67-72).
History repeated itself in Wednesday’s third round as the Roadrunners’ effort on the back nine drove separation between UTSA and No. 40 Old Dominion, who led the field coming into the day and for a solid portion of the third round. In 2018, the Monarchs found themselves in the driver’s seat early before UTSA fired off seven birdies after the turn to steal the title. Four Roadrunners sunk under par in their final respective rounds on Wednesday to return to the top spot.
Old Dominion, however, was upended by Charlotte in the final holes to land in third place. The 49ers were +1 on Wednesday with the help of Cecilie Finne-Ipsen's 2-under 70 to tally the team total to 2-over 866. The Monarchs fell one stroke behind with a plus-7 showing in the third round after entering the day in first place.
Wednesday's last round also saw UTEP's Audrey Haddad fire an ace on Old Orange's par 3 No. 6 hole.
UTSA is headed to the NCAA Regionals for the fifth time in program history. The NCAA Division I Women's Golf Selection Show is set for 4:30 p.m. CT Wednesday, April 24 on the Golf Channel.
