Diaper Sizes?

Im registering for baby items & want to include diapers but have no idea what size 1,2,3 mean. Most likely im having a big baby (9+Lbs) so i want to make sure i ask for sizes i can use now & later.

What size should i ask for?

  • I wouldn't bother with nb diapers if you expect a 9lb'er. Just fold down the front of 1s if they are too tall. I would only register for 1s and 2s honestly. MAYBE 3s. Some kids never get out of 3s. My son is 2 and is in a 5. We often sized up once he started peeing through them, not necessarily in line with weight, but close. Huggies and other brands run on the same pounds, but cut is different (I find huggies premium diapers to be narrowest, then huggies cheap diapers (snug n dry), then pampers cheap diapers (baby dry), then pampers premium diapers like cruisers or swaddlers are the largest).

Oh, and the avg. diapers per day on this chart is low. I only used it for the weights.

  • I would agree size 1 and 2.
  • I would ask for a mix of sizes nb-4 depending on how much space you have. My daughter was 7 pounds at birth and we used newborn diapers for a few weeks. They were really nice for the umbilical cord cut out. Otherwise they are in 1s for a while. I forget the weights on each, but you could look it up.

  • Also, if you see size 1-2 anywhere, it's a size 1 diaper with the absorbancy of size 2's, NOT a size that falls in between 1 and 2, which is what I thought until I asked Pampers once. Huggies confirmed for them too.

  • My 8lbs9oz (biggest of all 8lbs range babies) wore NB for a few weeks, but that is 1/2 lb smaller than 9lbs. I would register for some NB if you are doing it now, you can always exchange them if your baby really is 9lbs. Going out for diapers is a pain in the first few days and too big is REALLY too big!

  • Great info, thank you for the help!
  • If you're having a 9lb baby, start with size 1...
My ODS was 9lb5oz and we had to start with size 1 and fold them down so they didn't irritate the cord.
