[edit]Your speedy deletion of File:Ann-Helén Laestadius - Hei fávru - Inari Saami.jpg as advertising spam
[edit]Hi. You deleted File:Ann-Helén Laestadius - Hei fávru - Inari Saami.jpg, which was uploaded by Muotâ as advertising spam inspite of COM:INUSE. That file is within the scope of the Inari Saami Wikipedia and was being used to illustrate the article of the very book the book cover is from, which goes against COM:INUSE:
A media file that is in use on one of the other projects of the Wikimedia Foundation is considered automatically to be useful for an educational purpose
and
It should be stressed that Commons does not overrule other projects about what is in scope. If an image is in use on another project (aside from use on talk pages or user pages), that is enough for it to be within scope.
Furthermore, you have not left any sort of message on Muotâ's talk page to say it was being deleted or why. I would appreciate it if you would undelete it and also restore it in the article on smnwiki it was used in, which you incorrectly tagged as advertising spam. I have declined your spurious request for the article to be speedy deleted as spam there. - Yupik (talk) 02:36, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- I've undeleted it. I'm not convinced that it isn't spam, but I'm using Google Translate and you're a local admin and presumably speak the language. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 02:59, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. There is no Google Translate for Inari Saami, so not sure what it's telling you. I think it's important that Inari Saami speakers can see their own literature reflected in Wikipedia and this was the first time we could upload the cover of a book to illustrate one of the articles. The article is also connected to other important pages on the Inari Saami Wikipedia such as the author's page and "Books in Saami languages published in 2024", so it feels off that both the image and the article were marked as advertising spam. - Yupik (talk) 09:47, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
"I'm not sure what you mean."
[edit]I meant if you could just undelete the photo with the problematic part cropped off Trade (talk) 07:35, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
File:Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users sign.jpeg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

ANU report about Dronebogus
[edit]I don't want to beat a dead horse. But the ANU report about Dronebogus seems like a pretty cut and dry instance of harassment to me. I asked him not to contact me on my talk page, he did, and the guideline is pretty clear that unwanted attention or contact constitutes harassment. So can you tell me what exactly I was wrong about there? At least IMO it's totally within my right to tell people not to leave me messages on my talk page if I want to and then report them if they aren't willing to respect the request. Or should I just be forced to have people who are causing me stress and anxiety repeatedly contact me against my wishes? Adamant1 (talk) 10:43, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
Block on FreierAlvin
[edit]You blocked User:FreierAlvin as sock, but it was only lasted for 3 years, not indefinite. Would you mind to adjust the expiration of block on this user? A1Cafel (talk) 03:26, 14 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. Done. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 04:00, 14 October 2024 (UTC)
Incomplete closure on Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by AvelTop1
[edit]A couple of the files on this deletion nomination (mostly stock charts like File:WEGE3.jpg) weren't deleted when you closed the nomination. Omphalographer (talk) 19:28, 26 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. Sometimes the bulk resolution tool does that. Fixed! The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 20:11, 26 October 2024 (UTC)
Adminship
[edit]I'm working my way through the adminship applications on the English WP, which is quite a time-consuming task given the size of the pool. I've just reviewed your application and get the sense from the comments that whilst it's an unusual case, there seems to be consensus that it makes sense to have cross-Wiki admins.
I certainly agree with that thinking and as a en.WP admin who is quite active on Commons, and looking after Wikipedia's mainpage (which involves media files, of course), I've often had similar thoughts. Wouldn't it be good to get adminship on Commons, too, so that I can deal with admin issues myself rather than having to wait for somebody else to find time? I don't hang out in the administrative area of Commons, hence cannot judge whether the sentiments that you expressed in your application would be seen like that on Commons as well. I'd like to hear your thoughts on that. In terms of my admin-adjacent activity on Commons, I regularly nominate files for deletion. On Wikipedia, I frequently use Commons media protection to protect media files as the page history will show you. IRL, I'm friends with Commons admin Podzemnik if you'd like to have a check in with a fellow admin. Please ping me when you reply as my Commons watchlist is so large that it's become near-useless, and talk page replies can easily be overlooked. Schwede66 22:59, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
I shall note that most of my deletion requests are much less controversial than the last one I posted. Schwede66 23:09, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Schwede66: My perception of Commons RfAs is that there are three criteria that are important:
- You have a strong knowledge of copyright - enough that you can be trusted to close things at COM:DR and to handle things like COM:CSD#F1.
- You consistently communicate clearly and professionally
- You've been active on Commons for at least a year
- The Commons RFA process is nowhere near as... erm... involved as the en.Wikipedia one. Skimming your talk page archives, you might get some questions trying to make sure your understanding of COM:DW is up to snuff (based on some deleted uploads from a while back), but I suspect your RfA would be successful on your merits as a Commons user, let alone as a cross-wiki admin. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 00:29, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. What's the story with nominators? Is that common, or even preferred, or are self-noms the done thing? Schwede66 01:13, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Schwede66: IIRC, every successful RfA on Commons in the last three years has been a self-nom. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 01:38, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- Interesting. Good to know. Schwede66 01:42, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- My own has been a self-nom. @Schwede66, I'm certain you will make it. All the best. We definitely could use more Commoners who are also admins on en-wiki. Regards, Aafi (talk) 04:51, 6 November 2024 (UTC)

Bother. I've just seen the admin election results, and you came close, but didn't quite make it. I'm sorry to see that. I have yet to read the election debrief in full but note that the lowest number of oppose votes was 74, and some candidates were strong enough that in a "normal RfA", they would have got close to zero opposes. Hence, there's something weird going on; it seems that some voters opposed across the board. If it hadn't been for this odd behaviour, you'd now been an admin on the English Wikipedia. Either way, I'm sorry that it didn't work out this time and if you'd like to run again at some point, feel free to get in touch beforehand to talk about whether I can be your nominator. - @The Squirrel Conspiracy, I join the words of @Schwede66. I really felt sorry that you couldn't make it. Next time, for sure. Regards, Aafi (talk) 04:52, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
Hey, any chance you had time to close this one? Trade (talk) 01:23, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

Hello! I recently uploaded "File:Chaland and Puzzle piece on a blue background.gif", and I’m sure it’s under the CC-BY-SA-4.0 license. However, I noticed it’s been categorized under "Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike missing SDC copyright status" and "Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 missing SDC copyright license". Could you help me take a look at this? Thanks so much, and have a wonderful day. P. ĐĂNG (talk) 09:13, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
- P. ĐĂNG: SDC is Commons:Structured data. Bots should add the structured data automatically and remove those categories sometime in the next few days. You can ignore those categories; they're just there to tell the bots that there's a new file they need to work on. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 09:17, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
- I've seen that the file has been adjusted. Thank you! P. ĐĂNG (talk) 03:13, 3 November 2024 (UTC)

Request to restore deleted images
[edit]Good morning @The Squirrel Conspiracy,
I would like to kindly request the restoration of some images that I uploaded to Commons from my main account, Macrobreed. I am no longer active on that account and now use this alternative account. The images are as follows:
- File:Cactus Foundation volunteer 1.jpg
- File:Cactus Foundation volunteer 2.jpg
- File:Dr. Ritwiz Bihari on World Stroke Day.jpg
These images were deleted for being out of scope. Please refer to Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Macrobreed for more details. I understand that some of the other images I uploaded may not meet Commons' scope. However, I added all images in good faith, either sourced from Flickr or created by myself, such as the image taken on World Stroke Day.
Thank you for your consideration. Macrobreed2 (talk) 10:58, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- Please put this request on COM:UNDEL. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 15:39, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- @The Squirrel Conspiracy, Thank you for your reply. I really appreciate your help and guidance. Macrobreed2 (talk) 13:21, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
Deletion requests
[edit]Hey, I think you have mistakenly closed 40+ deletion requests, e.g. 1, 2, 3 related to the maps uploaded by the user User:Saad_Ali_Khan_Pakistan as deleted even though they were kept. However, I've fixed all of them. Iwaqarhashmi (talk) 15:39, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. Looks like there's something broken with the close tool. I know I clicked Keep because it created the keep page (File talk:NA-104 map.png, etc.), but somehow the wrong text appeared. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 18:09, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- No worries! Seems like there was a glitch with the tool, but it's all good now. Have a good one! Iwaqarhashmi (talk) 19:15, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
