Wikimedia Commons: Ten million files

Wikimedia Commons, the multilingual free-content media repository project of the Wikimedia Foundation, reached the milestone of ten million files uploaded on April 15, 2011. The 5 millionth uploaded file was attained on September 9, 2009, so the project has doubled in size in only nineteen months.

The ten millionth file is a photo of an observation platform taken during a Wikiexpedition by User:Leinad and has been licensed under CC-BY-SA-3.0.

We don't know exactly what image corresponds to exactly what upload number, especially now that the pace of uploads has become so rapid. For example, it would be almost impossible to determine exactly what file was the nine-millionth: it came during an extremely rapid upload of Geograph photos.

Commons currently has 3,406 featured pictures, over 16,400 quality images and 2,179 valued images.

Geograph Britain and Ireland is a web-based probject that provides geographically located and freely licensed imagery of the Great Britain and Ireland. With the assistance of Geograph's developers, much of the Geograph database has been uploaded to Commons. This is the largest single upload to date on Commons, and has contributed over 1.8 million files in the past 18 months. About 80% of all the geographically located files on Commons are from Geograph.

We have got millions of photos, but mostly from Europe, North America and Asia. What indeed about Africa? It's still terra incognita?

Locations have been specified for over two million files by means of the latitude and longitude from where the media was recorded. Several exports are made - for example to this OpenStreetMap world map (please zoom in to a region) showing geocoded files.
