About Us
The Institute of Child Health (ICH), founded in 1960, is Nigeria's first institute for research on diseases affecting children and related issues. The ICH was established from a grant given to the Federal Government of Nigeria by the United African Company (UAC) at independence. The aim of the Federal Government then was to establish centres in different parts of the country for the specific purpose of reducing the high incidence of morbidity and mortality among children in Nigeria. The ICH was initially supported by the Ministry of Education via the University of Ibadan, the Ministry of Health via regular subventions, and the Rockefeller Foundation. Now, the University of Ibadan, is responsible for the running of the institute.
As a forward-thinking institution that wants to become a global centre of excellence, ICH's mandate has grown over the past 60 years to include research, training, and services, all relating to childhood through adolescence. This is in line with the University of Ibadan's vision and the need to meet societal needs.
Our Vision
To be a world-class centre of excellence for child and adolescent health research, training, and services with evidence of global impact.
Our Mission
To provide an enabling environment for learning, quality research, and need-driven services that support the health and well-being of children and their future adults.
Our Operational Strategy
The ICH strategies are delivered through the operations of four teams of academic staff (known as ICH academic units) and Three support service units, namely the Child Welfare Clinics, Adolescent Health Clinics, and the ICH routine laboratory.
ICH Academic Units
…we are committed to the promotion of the optimal development of a healthy child through adolescence into healthy adulthood.
