Dr Cynthia Carter is a Reader in the Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, Cardiff University.

She has published widely, with particular research interests in children and news, feminist media studies, citizen journalism and human rights, children's rights and well being and violence and the media. Her books include Routledge Companion to Media and Gender (2014); Current Perspectives in Feminist Media Studies (2013); Critical Readings: Violence and the Media (2006); Critical Readings: Media and Gender (Open University Press, 2004), Violence and the Media (Open University Press, 2003), Environmental Risks and the Media (Routledge, 2000) and News, Gender and Power (Routledge, 1998).

She is Founding Co-Editor of the journal Feminist Media Studies (Routledge) and is current or past editorial board member of Communication, Culture & Critique (Wiley-Blackwell), Communication Review (Taylor & Francis), Communication Theory (Wiley-Blackwell), Critical Studies in Media Communication (Taylor & Francis), Fifth Estate (online), Journal of Children and Media (Routledge), Online Journal of Communication and Media Technologies, Sociology Compass (Blackwell), and Studies on Women and Gender Abstracts (Routledge).

Feminist journalism research has produced a rigorous evidence base, constructed over decades, est... more Feminist journalism research has produced a rigorous evidence base, constructed over decades, establishing that men and men’s interests and actions tend to be highly valued in society and more widely and prominently covered by journalists than those of women. Considering girls’ historical relationships to journalism and the news provides a context for understanding current ones. Persuasive periodical accounts of women journalists emphasised both the rigors and attractions of the profession, often casting the female journalist as a heroic New Woman figure adaptable to modern and challenging work environments. Historically “real,” professional journalism has been regarded as including certain topics such as politics, economics, war, law, and business. Public responses to her activities as a young journalist fall within a narrow range, from those who think she ought to be playing with dolls and hosting pretend tea parties, to disbelief that what she is doing is in any way “proper” journalism

Each contributor has authored a brief, thought-provoking commentary on the current status and future directions of feminist media studies. Although contributors write about numerous, discrete subjects within the field of feminist media studies, their various ideas and concerns can be merged into six broad, overlapping subject areas that allow us to gain a strong sense of the expansive contours of current feminist communication scholarship and activism which the authors have identified as generally illustrative of the field. Specifically, authors encourage feminist media scholars to engage with issues of political economy, new ICTs and cybercultures as well as digital media policy, media and identity, sexuality and sexualisation, and postfeminism. They stress that feminist media scholars must broaden and deepen our theoretical frameworks and methodologies so as to provide a better sense of the conceptual complexities of feminist media studies and empirical realities of contemporary media forms, practices and audiences.

This article assesses the potential of online news reporting to create discursive spaces for emph... more This article assesses the potential of online news reporting to create discursive spaces for emphatic engagement-of bearing witness-at a distance, especially where human rights violations are concerned. Taking as its focus the emergent forms and practices of citizen journalism, it examines the spontaneous actions of ordinary people compelled to adopt the role of news reporter in order to bear witness to human suffering. Specifically, findings derived from three case studies of citizen journalism are presented: 1) the 2004 South Asian Tsunami; 2) human rights abuses in India's northeast region; and 3) the Palestinian Crisis in the Occupied Territories. In each instance, it is argued, citizen journalism engendered new approaches to eyewitness reporting, a process shown to have important implications for challenging familiar 'us and them' dichotomies in news reports.

Background: Children, young people and their families need high quality information in order to s... more Background: Children, young people and their families need high quality information in order to support decisions they make about looking after themselves and staying healthy. When children are unwell, they and their families require tailored information to make choices about their health and healthcare, the medicines they take and the various services that the NHS offers. However, very little information has been specifically produced for children and their families and very little is known about their information preferences and how information is used.What we propose to do: We will undertake a study to provide a full picture of the information needs and preferences of children and young people, under 18 years with specific healthcare needs and conditions, and their families, and make this information widely available.About the Study: Using a three-phase research design that includes a range of children/young people under 18 years with common long-term conditions including asthma, diabetes, and disabled children with complex needs, and acute conditions including unplanned orthopaedic surgery/interventions and planned ear, nose and throat surgery, we will:1. Review literature and currently available information sources for children under 18 years and their families;2. Conduct interviews with children, young people, family members and health professionals, and observe where information is exchanged and used in routine clinical practice, and3. Combine information from phases 1 & 2 to make recommendations concerning children/young people and family members information needs and preferences.We will publish papers and web-based resources, including a version of the report for the public. This will ensure maximum impact of our findings amongst health service users, practitioners, managers and policy makers.
