The author offers as a model a course she created and taught entitled “Borges, Buddhism, and Cognitive Science.” The course investigates the Argentine writer’s lifelong study of Buddhism and incorporates a laboratory element in which students learned and practiced principles of meditation.

There are at least 12 million undocumented immigrants in the US. and many more people have suffered the experience of being undocumented while in the path to citizenship. This large segment of our population has been almost invisible and voiceless until recent legislation and work through organizations have brought awareness to their plight.
Through these stories we begin to understand the wide range of lives that are touched by the experience of being undocumented, and the many facets of their struggle. It is a far reaching and serious problem in our society. May these stories help us to face the problem and better understand it by hearing from that invisible population.
Says Sue Schweik--UC Berkeley Professor--in the Foreword:
We readers of this book have a chance in turn to integrate our intentions with the beautiful action recorded in and exemplified by this writing. Follow these writers and take these stories in.
Barili adds, in the Preface: may they (these stories) also serve to inspire other undocumented immigrants and youth, who may find in these stories a deep appreciation for their own challenges and hardships. And may we all contribute to solve this problem. ¡Sí, se puede!

Propongo hoy leer “La muerte y la brújula” como un modo inédito de intervención político-lite... more Propongo hoy leer “La muerte y la brújula” como un modo inédito de intervención político-literaria en el contexto cultural argentino y latinoamericano de su época, como una operación de apropiación y rearticulación de discursos y formas de representación dominantes. Sugiero asimismo que hay una similitud notable entre la encrucijada político-cultural en la que se encontraron Reyes y Borges y la encrucijada en la que nos encontramos hoy ante el canon crítico del latinoamericanismo internacional. En otras palabras, en los años treinta y cuarenta Borges (en la estela de Reyes) intentó rearticular la relación colonizador/colonizado, convertir el margen en centro de significado y hablar “de igual a igual” al pensamiento europeo y norteamericano. Ante la imagen fija y plana de Latinoamérica –imagen alimentada, o confirmada, por cierta lectura metropolitana de las novelas regionalistas latinoamericanas de los años veinte– lo inédito de la respuesta de Reyes y Borges es que eligieron marcar la especificidad del continente no hablando sobre lo que era obviamente diferente sino desde la diferencia.2 Es decir: se negaron a la lógica aparentemente inevitable de la relación centro- margen y eligieron hablar desde su propia perspectiva, convirtiendo de esta manera su aparente condición de marginalidad en origen de nuevos significados.
Abstract: Written in the style of Borges’s “Kafka and His Precursors”, this text aims at reading ... more Abstract: Written in the style of Borges’s “Kafka and His Precursors”, this text aims at reading Borges in relationship to Anzaldúa and Anzaldúa in relationship to Borges. Further, it reflects on the means both authors apply to enunciate their identity from a marginal position. It will hopefully show that Borges and Anzaldúa in particular, and – by extension – Chicano and Latin- American writers in general, share common perspectives that can prove mutually enriching if analysed with respect to the formation of a new subject which expresses his/her own voice on an equal footing with dominant discourses.
The article relates the concepts of “aleph”, “borderlands” and “nepantla” as fluid zones so as to draw meanings from multiple fragments and influences of diverse character that form our identity. It suggests that both Anzaldúa and Borges illustrate this life in between cultures and this double vision (simultaneous seeing from different angles) that make cultural conditioning apparent and allow for its subversion. The two writers put emphasis on experience as a determining factor of the literary content and, taking into consideration both the writer and the reader as well as reception and production horizons, give voice to the complexity of cultural miscegenation.

Although the work of such icons of Latin American literature as Borges, Garcia Marquez, Fuentes, Cortazar, and Rulfo--to name just a few-- is widely regarded internationally, the Latin American literary theory that preceded and influenced that work has not been properly studied and discussed yet. This book which studies the work of Mexican erudite, Alfonso Reyes, and the development of his influential concept of "inteligencia americana", begins to fill that gap.

Almost seventy years later, in 1993, Borges' widow, Maria Kodama, gave permission for the book to be reprinted. The article relates the concepts of “aleph”, “borderlands” and “nepantla” as fluid zones so as to draw meanings from multiple fragments and influences of diverse character that form our identity. It suggests that both Anzaldúa and Borges illustrate this life in between cultures and this double vision (simultaneous seeing from different angles) that make cultural conditioning apparent and allow for its subversion. The two writers put emphasis on experience as a determining factor of the literary content and, taking into consideration both the writer and the reader as well as reception and production horizons, give voice to the complexity of cultural miscegenation.
