You didn’t expect him to stay quiet for long, did you? George Steinbrenner has released one of his legendary statements in support of the Yankees’ management which will no doubt bring all speculation about Joe Torre’s job security to an end. Or maybe not. A Chairman’s vote of confidence is always reckoned to be a sure sign that a football manager is about to get the elbow. Steinbrenner lives by his own rules and is much more prone to making his feelings known publicly than most football chairmen would do, but there’s certainly a sense of something brewing in the Bronx. Slim pickings again
This week’s choice of games on MLB.TV for British fans wanting to catch some live baseball in the evening (all times BST). Unfortunately it looks like another week to catch up on some archived games. Continue reading
Josh Hancock R.I.P.
I just logged-on to MLB.com to check some facts for a post I’m writing when I saw the tragic news that Josh Hancock, the St Louis reliever, has been killed in a car crash. Tonight’s game against the Cubs, scheduled to be shown live on Five, has understandably been postponed. Sincere condolences to his family on sadly yet another death in the baseball world.
2007 – Week 4
A standard week in MLB, with heroes and zeroes, success and failure, and a bit of comedy thrown in for good measure. Trevor Hoffman accounted for more of it than he would have liked, although he gets bonus points here as his mother was born in England (and it’s fair to say his career has been half-decent to say the least, this week notwithstanding). Blood and Baltimore broadcasters
Any Brit who thinks baseball is any easy, non-contact sport should try catching a Zack Greinke fastball in their mouth. Torii Hunter gave it a go today and ended up with a bloody lip and a trip to hospital. According to reports, Hunter initially started to confront Greinke about his lack of control before collapsing in pain. I haven’t seen it yet, but it doesn’t sound much fun. Hopefully Hunter won’t be out of the Twins’ lineup for long (and no he isn’t in my fantasy team!). Continue reading
This week’s live games
Apart from the normal clutch of Thursday day games, it’s fairly slim pickings this week when it comes to live games being played during the evening British time. Here is my pick of the best games available on MLB.TV, times being listed in BST. Continue reading
Week 3
Weekly hit ground ball always tries to look at the funnier side of the game and this week there has been plenty of topics to choose from. Week three was the week of Pizza and the Phillies. Continue reading
Injuries and my fantasy team
Fantasy baseball has the ability to divide fans of the sport simply because it makes you look at the game in a completely different way. Injuries are a good case in point. Continue reading
Heading to the DL?
While we would love to see the players on the field making all of the headlines, the recent rush of players on to the disabled list has been the main news over the past week or so. Continue reading
Live baseball this week
One of the many little things I’m adding to this site is a weekly highlights schedule of live matches to watch in the evening over here in GB. Once again, apologies to those of you unable to watch MLB.tv, I know this is rubbing it in! I guess I should add the standard disclaimer that the schedules and probable pitching matchups were correct at time of writing. With all of the games being postponed over the weekend due to bad weather, it’s difficult to be certain who will be pitching when this week. Continue reading
