Virginia District Courts
The Virginia District Courts, created in 1973, are trial courts in the Commonwealth of Virginia that have jurisdiction over cases such as traffic violations, misdemeanors and civil claims for less than $4,500. For civil cases between $4,500 and $25,000, jurisdiction is shared with the circuit courts.[1][2]
Judges of the district courts are elected by the Virginia General Assembly for terms of six years.[3]
