A vote about whether to recall Virgie Thompson from her position as mayor of Houston, Alaska, took place on July 26, 2011. Thompson was retained in her seat.[1]
Background
The application for a petition to recall Thompson was submitted on April 6, 2011, to the city clerk's office in Houston by Houston City Councilwoman Ruth Blanchard and Houston Planning Commissioner Ralph Buzard. In their petition, they said that Thompson "committed misconduct in office by offering a false instrument for recording in the first degree in violation of Alaska Statute 11.46.550 and theft by failure to make required disposition of funds received or held in violation of Alaska Statute 11.46.210."[1] The recall petition asserted that when Thompson was out-of-state in November 2010, she nevertheless filled out a timecard and accepted employment pay.[2]
Thompson's original term was set to end in October 2011.[3]
About Houston
Houston is a city in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. It is part of the Anchorage, Alaska Metropolitan Statistical Area and its population was estimated to be 1,202 at the 2000 census.
Path to the ballot
50 valid signatures of Houston registered voters were required to force a special recall election. Supporters of the recall submitted 63.[3]
