Steve C. Jones is a judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. He joined the court in 2011 after being nominated by Barack Obama. Prior to becoming a federal judge, Jones was a judge on the Western Circuit of the 10th Superior Court District of Georgia.[1][2]

On May 16, 2024, Jones announced that he would assume senior status on January 1, 2025.[3]

Education

Jones received his B.B.A. from the University of Georgia in 1978 and his J.D. from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1987.[2]

Professional career

After graduating from law school, Jones was Assistant District Attorney from 1987 to 1993. Next, he served as a municipal court judge in Athens for two years. In 1995, Jones became a judge of the 10th Superior Court District of Georgia.[2]

On July 14, 2010, President Obama nominated Jones to serve on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.[4] He was nominated to fill the seat vacated by Orinda Evans.[5]

Jones was unanimously rated "Well Qualified" by the American Bar Association. Jones' hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee was on November 17, 2010 and you can find his hearing transcript here.[6]He was moved out of committee and to the full Senate on a voice vote on December 8, 2010.[7]

Jones' nomination was returned to the President at the end of the 111th congress. President Obama resubmitted the nomination on January 5, 2011. Jones was confirmed to his position by the U.S. Senate on February 28, 2011 by an 90-0 vote.[8]
