The company was based in Richmond, Virginia, and manufactured several of the nation's top-selling cigarette brands, including Marlboro and Parliament. Philip Morris USA was a subsidiary of Altria Group Inc., a tobacco and wine corporation.[1][2]
Background
Philip Morris USA was originally established in 1847 as the Philip Morris & Company Ltd. tobacco shop in London, England. The company incorporated in New York in 1902 and began manufacturing cigarettes in Richmond, Virginia, in 1929. Philip Morris Companies, the holding company and parent organization of Philip Morris Inc., was created in 1985 and changed its name to Altria Group Inc. in 2003. As of September 2016, Philip Morris USA operated as a subsidiary of Altria Group Inc.[1]
Philip Morris USA manufactured smokeless tobacco products as well as several of the top-selling cigarette brands in the United States, including Marlboro, Parliament, Virginia Slims and L&M.[4]
