Murphy's website highlighted the following campaign themes:
“ | Providing Adequate Healthcare Close to Home
Bobby Jindal's bone-deep cuts to our state's healthcare funding, among his other disastrous decisions, have resulted in closings of healthcare clinics and mental health facilities across the state. I will work to ensure that every citizen of the 12th district, and the rest of Louisiana, has access to proper health care close to home. Ensuring Proper Care for our Veterans I was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1972, but I knew my service to our nation didn't end there. I served as Commander of American Legion Post 24 in Bogalusa and remain active with veterans groups to this day. The men and women who have served our nation in the military deserve better than the dangerously long wait lists and bureaucratic messes at their local VA clinics. I will work with our federal delegation to fulfill our nation's commitment to the men and women who have courageously served. Restore Bobby Jindal's Disastrous Cuts to Higher Education I’ve spent over forty years as an educator, from a public school teacher, to a welding instructor, to College Dean. Education and job training are key to attracting and keeping good paying jobs. However, recently it seems that all that the folks in Baton Rouge can do is cut those programs while giving big businesses sweetheart deals. The effects are evident here in in the 12th District, where Southeastern’s budget has been cut by nearly $50 million dollars. These cuts not only mean double the rate of tuition for our students, at a time when student debt is out of control, but also a loss of jobs and economic growth here in the Florida Parishes. As your Senator, I would take an across the board evaluation of the tax credits. I will hold companies accountable for the money they have taken from Louisiana and work to restore a balanced budget that can support Louisiana's higher education.[3][4] |

Elections for the Louisiana State Senate took place in 2015. A primary election was held on October 24, 2015, with a general election held in districts where necessary on November 21, 2015. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was September 10, 2015, at 4:30 p.m. CDT.[5]
Louisiana elections use the Louisiana majority-vote system. All candidates compete in the same primary, and a candidate can win the election outright by receiving more than 50% of the vote. If no candidate does, the top two vote recipients from the primary advance to the general election, regardless of their partisan affiliation.
For information about which offices are nominated via primary election, see this article. Mickey Murphy (D), Brett Duncan (R), Beth Mizell (R) and John Seal (I) faced off in the October 24 blanket primary. Murphy and Mizell advanced to the November 21 runoff, where Mitzell won election.[6][7]
