An effort to recall Steve Martinez, Terri Worf, Merilyn Douglass, Blake Wasinger, Jeff Crist, and Leonard Hitz from their positions on the Garden City Community College Board of Trustees in Kansas was launched in June 2018. County officials ruled that the petitions did not sufficiently show the grounds for recall, therefore the recalls did not go to a vote.[1][2]
Initial petitions to recall Steve Martinez, Terri Worf, Merilyn Douglass, Blake Wasinger, and Jeff Crist were submitted in early June 2018 by Toni Douglass, Zach Worf, and Maxine Atkinson. The petitions said that the board members did not act in the best interest of their constituents. Finney County Attorney Susan Richmeier denied those petitions because state law says that more than a majority plus one of the officials on a governing body cannot be recalled simultaneously. Therefore, only three members of the six-person board could be recalled at one time.[3]
On June 13, 2018, paperwork was submitted by Douglass, Worf, and Atkinson to recall Terri Worf and Jeff Crist. On the same day, paperwork was also submitted to recall Leonard Hitz. The Hitz petition was submitted by Cecil O’Brate, Kristi Tempel, and Kevin Wiles, and alleged that Hitz had sexually harassed students at the May 2018 graduation ceremony. Hamilton County Attorney Rob Gale denied all three petitions, on the grounds that the Worf and Crist petitions were not specific enough to show grounds for recall and the Hitz petition did not properly show misconduct.[2]
