An effort to recall two Flat Rock city council members was launched on July 20, 2009 by mayoral candidate Arthur Coen. Targeted officials included Flat Rock Councilmen Eric Painter and Jonathan Dropiewski, who was also a mayoral candidate. Dropiewski won the mayoral election on November 3, 2009. After the election, he stated that the petition against him was a moot point now that he was mayor. He said, "I’m glad the voters were able to see past the obviously politically motivated attempt to recall me."[1]
According to the filed petition, Coen said that Dropiewski was in favor of "changing the Flat Rock city charter so that future city councilpersons are appointed by the mayor instead of being elected by the citizens of Flat Rock.” Dropiewski, however, said that he disagreed with the statement. The reason given for Painter's recall was that he voted for a 2009-10 fiscal year budget with a $488,158 deficit.[2]
The councilmen's then-current terms were scheduled to end in 2011.
The Wayne County Election Commission approved the language in the petition on October 19, 2009. Recall supporters needed to collect sufficient signatures in order to place the measure on the ballot.[3] The recalls did not make the ballot in 2010 or 2011.[4]
