An effort to recall Mayor Dave Bing was brewing in the City of Detroit, Michigan in 2009. Residents voiced their intent to recall the mayor at an August 2009 meeting. The meeting was attended by Congressman John Conyers. "Congressman Conyers came into the meeting... and he said that if there are cuts, if Mayor Bing goes through with the cuts, then we shall recall him. We're going to recall Mayor Bing as soon as he makes those finalized bus cuts on September 26th," said Detroit resident.

Bing took office in May 2009.

On November 3, 2009 Bing was elected to full term as Detroit mayor. A recall petition has not been submitted.d

Reasons for recall

Recall threats began when Bing announced the possibility of deep budget cuts in light of the city's current financial status. Included in potential budget cuts is the possibility of a reduction in bus service, but the cut has been yet been confirmed. In regards to the possible recall and budget cuts Bing said, "We know that we have to make changes. Then when you come out and say, 'Well, here's some of the changes we're thinking about.' People say, ... 'That's going to impact me. It's all right for you to do something as long as you impact other people, but not me.' And that's not the way it's going to work." Bing added that he believes he has inherited the worst situation but is dealing with it and letting residents know exactly how bad the situation is.

On August 28, 2009, Bing announced layoffs of 205 Detroit city employees.
