An effort to recall Dan Hawkins from his position as an elected member of the Wymore City Council in Gage County, Nebraska, was launched in January 2011. Hawkins was recalled.

Background

Lee J. Carr, a resident of Wymore, was a leader in the recall effort. Carr accused Hawkins of walking out of city council meetings, leaving the city council short of a quorum and being unable to conduct business.

Hawkins left city council meetings several times when the discussion turned to the topic of whether to appoint Beth Cordry-Hookstra to fill a vacant seat on the Wymore Council, according to reports. Hawkins said he left the meetings to "protest the Mayor’s refusal to acknowledge and present other experienced candidates that have applied for the vacancy...I’m against the Mayor’s bias to appoint an individual he thinks is the only one with the city’s best interest in mind. I question the Mayor’s motive in considering one individual and ignoring other possible candidates." The recall effort was approved.

Recall organizers collected 52 signatures in the 30-day period after petition filing to force a special recall election.
