An effort to recall Barbara Read from her position on the Dexter Community School District Board of Education in Michigan did not go to a vote in 2018. The effort began in January 2018. The leader of the recall effort said Read threatened him and his wife. Read denied the accusation.[1]

The recall effort was started after Read filed a Title IX complaint in August 2017 that alleged there were disparities between the district's male cross country team and its female cross country team. A law firm hired by the district found there was insufficient evidence that the girls' team had been treated differently than the boys' team.[1]

In November 2017, Scott McLean, whose wife is a district cross country coach, accused Read of bullying and harassing his wife by spreading misinformation about her to parents and students. Superintendent Chris Timmis said that an investigator hired by the district to look into the complaint found no violation. Timmis said the district's anti-bullying policy did not apply to a situation where a coach was the target, according to MLive.[1]

Read first joined the seven-member board in 2013. Her term was due to expire in December 2020.[1][2]

Recall supporters

Scott McLean filed the recall paperwork against Read. The recall petition stated: "On January 23rd, 2018, Barbara Read addressed the Washtenaw County Election Commission and stated she would hate to see any harm come to Mr. and Mrs. McLean if they continue to pursue her recall."[1][3]

Cheri McLean, Scott McLean's wife, said she was strained during the 2017 cross country season due to the Title IX complaint filed by Read. "Dexter has always had a really good running program and I'm continuing with that. This type of behavior is not good for a program," Cheri McLean said. "For me, as a coach, negativity is like a cancer. ... Gossip is like a cancer and it gets spread."[1]

Recall opponents

Read said she did not remember using the words McLean described on the recall petition. "I believe it's taken out of context," said Read. "That's a paraphrase, and I was just saying that I'm not mad and it would be great if we could move forward."[1]

Read did not comment on the results of the investigation into her Title IX complaint.[1]
