A vote about whether to recall Audrey Viau from her position as Village President of Elmwood Park, Wisconsin, took place on September 18, 2012. Viau was recalled from her position. The recall effort was launched in July 2012.

Reasons for recall

Nick Haas, a member of Friends of Elmwood Park, initiated the recall effort. The recall effort stemmed from the unhappiness of some village residents over a potential Walmart in the village. A developer requested to have a 3-acre residential area rezoned in order to build a Walmart. The recall petition accused Viau of "neglect of duty as board president” and included a list of 11 infractions allegedly committed by Viau. Some of those alleged infractions included failing to give plans for a proposal to build a Walmart to all Plan Commission members before an open house on the project was held by the village, and calling “a controversial Walmart Board meeting with insufficient notice (less than the 48 hours required in advance for a Monday night meeting).” In late August, Walmart announced they were dropping plans to build a store in the village.

Path to the ballot

Recall organizers had 60 days to submit the signatures of 66 village voters. Sufficient signatures were submitted, and a recall election took place on September 18. Viau was recalled and replaced by challenger Tom Mills.
