The animation was quite bad, but.. both music and voice acting were surprisingly decent. 😮
And the plot attempt was better than I imagined.
I can't hate this, the dude really tried.

(but the rating can't still be great)

This anime wasn't too good, but 1.7? That's way too low.
Probably people watched it with the terrible eng dub, which killed it completely.

The story was ok-ish at the beginning. The split in both worlds was weird, but somewhat original, expecially for the sharing of knowledge between the 2 Chris.
But then the events focused too much on action and on a constant escape, so there wasn't time for worldbuilding or character development.
And the only interesting aspect of the "real life" side was kinda abandoned after half.

But the worst sin was that the story was left unfinished! The tribe never defeated the enemy king, nor found the tree (ok, irl Chris did.. somehow).
A pity, because the animation was decent and I liked some characters (Falan).
This could have been another Escaflowne, but instead ended up in the list of worst anime. What a waste.

Other comments:
spoilers

- those stock sound effects tho.. or the bow string sounding like a duct tape haha.
- WTF? Did the tribe really mock Chris in the end, despite his heroic deeds, just because he felt bad about finishing an enemy? Even the warrior girl gave him s**t!
- the Wings didn't actually help that much and kinda disappeared after a few fights.
- that ending with the flying bike was rushed and nonsensical

Umm.. I'm a bit disappointed by this one.
After the great UWB series, this felt just like.. a worse alternative story 🤷‍♂️
Hopefully FZ will be interesting again.

I enjoyed this anime so much!
Finally, a new classic fantasy title without the overused & unnecessary isekai trope and with an interesting premise.
I previously had already read some chapters of the manga and I have to say that this adaptation was great. Plus the animation was quite fluid (did they "rotoscope" it?)

Despite being slow and chill in the first half, this anime never bored me. Every flashback was interesting, emotional and not overlong. And every "sidequest" had some wholesome or learning moment.
Then the second half eventually provided some welcome action and some (power-fantasy) conflict to spice up the plot.
And the OST! It was so good. Most tracks were interesting and unique, expecially the epic orchestral pieces.
There was also a glimpse of fanservice here and there, but nothing bothersome.

The only things I didn't like too much were the first intro/outro that didn't seem very suitable, expecially stylistically.
And Frieren's voice seemed a bit tomboyish, compared to how I had imagined it, even if it eventually grew up on me.

Now I pray that the next season (essential for the story) will be as good as this one.
(and that they won't prolong it unnecessarily. Spinoffs could be ok, tho).

Other comments:

spoilers

- why did Himmel become so small with age?? At first I thought it was the dwarf Eisen lol.
- this was just added for comedic effect, but a sleepyhead adventurer like Frieren woudn't go very far with only half day of light for traveling..
- I thought that her suitcase was a magical "bag of holding", but instead it was just a normal one. How does she even carry\keep all the trinkets collected from dungeons?
- btw Frieren must have a super memory to remember all those minor things happened many decades before.
- I'm surprised that Frieren & Fern were capable to levitate, but they didn't know a spell to protect themselves from cold weather hehe.
- the different perception of time of elves was a bit exaggerated sometimes. For example, years in prison wouldn't really have been brushed off as if they were nothing.
- after witnessing the power of curses also vs mages, it was madness to travel without an experienced priest!
- the exams for the first-class mages were quite unbalanced and idiotic. Why killing off decent wizards during the selections? But I guess it's the usual deadly tournament trope.
- btw Ubel murdered the cloacked guy in the past and she was just let go. Wow, nice justice system.
- the clone fight was so epic, expecially when she used a black hole spell!
- that brief scene at the end with the old mage wanting to kill Frieren (just to be remembered) was a bit silly and pointless.
- in this anime the characters remain too unfazed by serious wounds..

This was another enjoyable season, but.. the author basically repeated
the same twist we just saw about the monster with more than one body!

And the current foe wasn't even that memorable to justify it lasting for 11 episodes.

About the characters, I enjoyed Mitsuri and Kotetsu and I'm glad we took a break from the annoying Inosuke and Zenitsu.
Genya wasn't too interesting, instead (probably because we already have Nezuko?).

About the events, the fights were still full of deus ex machina resolutions, with new powers coming out of nowhere and deep wounds ignored until the monster was defeated.
Also, there was the usual flasbacks galore. I would have liked to know more about Mitsuri's and Muzan's past, but their scenes were rushed compared to Kotetsu's, which lasted too much. They spared us the monsters' ones at least.

Other comments:

- the final scene about Nezuko almost made me cry. When the song started, I feared she was going to die for real. 😭
- so the main uber vampire was created by.. a damn medicine? I hope there will be more explanation about that, because atm it's quite poor.
- btw the swordsmiths should change village at the end, since everything is already destroyed and the enemy now knows its location..

I waited for years to begin watching Fate, in case a remake of the first route happened, but.. I finally fed up.
I started from UBW and enjoyed it a lot! Great animation, interesting story, good fights plus some nice romance.

Even if I must say that the author kinda broke all the rules that he established at the beginning lol.
(the guardians and servants did whatever they want)

Also, some characters appeared a few times and got defeated soo fast.. it was a bit weird.
(for example Rider and Kirei)

I'm glad there's more, so next I'll watch HF and then FZ.
I don't know if I should even bother with the old FSN version, instead.

Other comments:
Spoilers

- I'm not sure why the Graal appeared and absorbed Gilgamesh at the end. Also, wasn't it destroyed? 🤷‍♂️
- I don't know how Rin could make a sudden pact with Saber while she was trapped between the swords (wasn't a long ritual required for it?)
- and why she didn't command Saber to rescue her while she was tied? (she risked death there)
- Rin and Shirou were a bit quick to forgive Shinji. He hated them and wanted to kill them!

Does the story progress in any way this season?
S1 was nice and had some interesting events towards the end, but S2 was basically episodic..

post #8 by phaolo on 25.04.2024 22:55 in comments

I've watched ~2\3 of this (web)season and I'm enjoying so far.
However, the audio feels a bit weird sometimes, as if the low frequency levels were balanced improperly (too high).
Also, starting around ep 23 the animation quality seems to have worsened in some frames. This doesn't bode well..

Cool OP\ED btw, even if they're the same for all the season.

Good anime, even if it was yet another one with too few episodes for fleshing out the characters properly.
Even if the authors did well enough with the running time they had (they couldn't resist adding a time-skip, however, lol).

The 2d animation was cool overall, but also.. a bit rough sometimes? During the action scenes it became a bit of a mess to follow.
The 3d parts were blended well, but the collisions were a bit too "bouncy" for my tastes.

Questions:

SPOILERS

1- Why didn't Lucy immediately tell David that the company wanted to use him as a test subject?
By doing so she caused him to unknowingly fall into their trap.

2- what was the meaning of Edgerunners BD 32? Why did it contain 31 and why did David put it on the shelf higher than the others?

Comments:
SPOILERS

- IMO the authors made a small mistake by not showing\reminding the reason why David pushed himself to the limit so much. After the time-skip it almost seemed to be a matter of greed.
Maybe showing debts to pay or technology costs would have helped (or even the price of the flight to the moon, since that wasn't such a spoiler)

- the kidnapped boss scene had too much things going on in quick succession, so it was easy to miss details
(Lucy discoveringing the info, David freezing and Tanaka waking up, Lucy being recovered, Maine getting crazy, the police incoming, etc..)

Btw damn, that ending made me shed a tear

All points I agree with, alas.
Even if I never liked your harsh rating scale.

post #11 by phaolo on 13.03.2024 14:34 in comments

I enjoyed this anime s1 enough, but IMO it needed way more episodes.
There wasn't enough time to know and care about the secondary characters.
And the funny\lewd moments ended up too crammed with tragic events and so they felt a bit dull (almost "disrespectful").

By the way, I didn't expect Denji to be such a bad character.
Can a simpleton (in both normal and modern meanings) antihero work in a story about the fight of good vs evil?
Can his pitiful goals create any serious engagement with the plot without any growth?
Wouldn't it have been better if he just strived for a purposeful life (maintaining the craziness during the tranformation), instead of being just hungry and horny?
Fanservice, as usual, became both a blessing and a curse.

For the rest, the production was great.

I liked this season, even if it had various high and lows.
It started annoyingly with Subaru still being pathetic, but luckily that improved by episode 4 (quite a cathartic one, I liked it overall).
Then the new challenges started and the story became interesting again.
There were too many tearjerker moments, though.
Also, the anime attempted to make various profound speeches, but sadly it often missed the mark. It was too busy maintaining the annoying harem aspect..
Anyway, I'm glad that the ending wasn't a cliffhanger, but not everything was fully explained.

Some comments (spoilers):

- Rem's plot went immediately in the background. I expected it to be the main "quest", but the Sanctuary took over, and then it was resolved off-screen at the very end. They didn't even show Ram's reaction

- I really liked the Witches, expecially Echidna.
Minerva (Wrath) was a bit weird tho, not really fit for her title (healing and some anger fits aren't very symbolic).
And Carmilla (Lust) was more kawaii than sexy. Pandora (Vanity) and Typhon (Pride) were a question mark, instead.

- btw I thought that Echidna simply wanted the "Return by Death" power to go back and resurrect, but her pact was more generic instead.

- Otto seemed like a background NPC, but he suddenly became Subaru's best friend and ally? That was a bit weird.
Roswaal addressed that fact too, but it's not like Subaru created such connection by himself. It was a kind of Deus Ex Machina.

- Subaru finally acquired some powers, but.. he only used them 1 time for a silly fight against Garfield. That was underwhelming.

- I didn't like Garfield, he was an uninteresting dumb character. And then he became the only one who could defeat Elsa, just with shapeshifting powers? Meh

- I wished that Subaru, after dying, used his knowledge to allow allies to win fights that previously ended in defeat. Instead they all went well without a reason.

- I hoped that Beatrice could be saved by Ryuuzu, but instead the authors had to follow the harem trope even for her. She wasn't even surprised to see her clone..

- the big monsters\beast were a bit goofy and not very scary. Also it didn't help that their growls were just made by voice actors lol

Some unexplained things (spoilers):

- wasn't the Sanctuary originally created to protect Echidna? The Warlock of Melancholy still managed to reach her before any barrier.
- how did she die then? She previously said that Satella (Envy) killed all the other witches.
- also, why bothering to create the trial to release the barrier?

- what happened to the witch of Vanity? What was she seeking inside the seal?

- why did Echidna hate Emilia?
- why did Satella look like Emilia?
- Minerva behave as if she were Emilia's mother..

Value. Since it doesn’t have much story or any REALLY strong scenes, I probably won’t remember it much after a while.
On the other hand, the lack of story and it’s mostly light-hearted mood makes it a solid candidate for a re-watch someday 6/10

This post was useful, but you should add it as a review! There are 0 at the moment.
It's sad that the story is basic tho, maybe I'll skip this.

I liked this season too, but for me it was way too short and limited to enjoy it like S1.
I see it was released as a movie first, so it makes sense (sorta).
Btw, due to its short duration, S2's wasted time with recaps & ending comic relief moments.. was more annoying than in S1.

SPOILER

I didn't expect the author to kill Rengoku already.. damn.
On one hand it's good that I didn't predict it (I mean, so soon), but on the other.. it feels a bit of a waste of an interesting character.
I hoped for some cool training scenes, but no.
Even if ep1 is considered filler, I appreciated that we could at least see Rengoku a bit more.

Btw, I'm disappointed that Nezuko's (now controlled) Blood Art power was never explained or even addressed with surprise.
But it seems a bit of a common issue in this anime.

post #15 by phaolo on 24.04.2023 17:31 in comments

I've finally watched this anime and I quite liked it!
Even if I wish that some powers were more earned.
Only 2 episodes of generic training seemed a bit too quick for suddenly managing to create.. magic blades.
And Tanjirou's superhuman sense of smell is never explained, as well as his huge scar.
(also, he immediately accepted to become a DS without questions, even if his goal was just to cure Nezuko..)

Btw I liked various secondary characters, but Zen'itsu was just super annoying and his "technique" was a bit silly.
And Inosuke was basically a criminal caveman, a liability more than anything.
I guess the author needed companions opposite to Tanjirou, but he exaggerated with the negatives.

Nezuko was understandably left a bit in the back, but I'm glad that she was able to partecipate to some events.

This was interesting enough to watch, even if some shorts seemed unfinished (carnage, 3 fallen witnesses, iconic field, hello from countries) and some felt like filler (making of, collection).
And the bizzarre or even nonsensical entries were plenty.

I ranked the shorts from best to worst like this:

35- cassette girl
34- robot on the road
06- 20min walk from nishi-ogikubo station
29- bureau of proto society
03- me! me! me!
--
01- the dragon dentist
11- power plant n33
31- girl
14- sex & violence with machspeed
19- I can friday by day
27- bubu & bubulina
25- hammerhead
10- yamadeloid
02- hill climb girl
15- obake-chan
24- rapid rouge
12- evangelion: another impact
32- neon genesis impacts
--
23- memoirs of amorous gentlemen
22- on a gloomy night
21- iconic field
08- tomorrow from there
28- endless night
20- me! me! me! chronic
26- comedy skit 1989
17- three fallen witnesses
09- gridman: boys invent great hero
30- the ultraman
18- the diary of ochibi
--
16- tokio of the moon's shadow
33- hello from the countries of the world
13- kanon
04- carnage
07- until you come to me
20x- making of evangelion: another impact
05- collection of key animation films

Various notes:
spoilers

- cassette girl + 20min walk + robot on the road-> the best entries of the list, even if the last one felt a bit creepy..
- bureau of proto society -> quite overrated, but still good. The "plot twist" was revealed since the start, but that final side-eye after the anime clip was so funny XD
- me! me! me! + girl + chronic -> I didn't know this exhibition was the first release of such shorts. They were a bit too flashy, gory and unsettling, but also interesting. The third clip was just a rehashed mess, tho.
- power plant n33 -> why did the robot attack the tamed and asleep kaiju? Was the (confused) message about nature retaking control or something?
- dragon dentist -> it was ok overall, but the teeth absorbing humans was a bit bulls**t shock factor.
- bubu & bubulina + machspeed -> I'm not sure why these two have been so low rated. I liked the different art styles and the stories were ok-ish.
- I can friday by day + obake-chan-> quite random\absurd events, but they were entertaining overall.
- yamadeloid -> so this ended like a weird stage play? Oh well, it was still good.
- rapid rouge -> this felt like it had a "Don't rebel, for the good of the country" message that I never liked.
- memoirs of amorous gentlemen -> 2 weird stories about perverts.. I liked the style, but that head polishing.. WTF
- iconic field + gloomy night -> these were a clusterf**k of ideas going nowhere.
- comedy skit -> this became fun when the twin girls appeared, but before it was boring. Too limited scenery, also.
- three fallen witnesses -> what was the point of this? Did the note at the end make the assassin regret his actions? I'm annoyed about the wasted potential of this short.

These movie prequels were nice, but they were released way too late. A "flashback" before the last season just breaks the flow of the story.
They were also a bit too drawn out, with many slow parts and long unnecessary fanservice moments.
And the animation was rough at times! And the yellowish color palette was weird.

post #18 by phaolo on 03.01.2023 08:13 in comments

Oof, I've finally managed to reach the end of Monogatari.
I must say I'm a bit disappointed tho, this part wasn't very interesting, expecially as a final entry! Owari2 was a better one.
Also, the highlights of the series were Bake, s2 and Kizu, but the rest was less good overall.

By the way, I wish this anime had been released in a chronological order.
I'm not a fan of messed up timelines, unless they serve some clear purpose (like better introductions or pacing. Or like adding revelations understandable only after witnessing the future events).
Otherwise it's just an afterthought or a fake mystery generated by the confused shuffled events (which break the flow of the story).

After seeing for the Nth time the strawberry thief clip, I finally decided to give this anime a go.

And it was surprisingly entertaining and wholesome!
Slice-of-life wasn't exactly my genre, so I feared that this anime could be boring, but.. it managed to keep my attention enough.
It was a relaxing break between the usual superhuman struggles and world-ending battles hehe.

Just.. too bad that the aforementioned clip is actually in season 2 lol!
(but other 22 eps are probably too much for me at the moment)

post #20 by phaolo on 04.10.2022 20:01 in comments

Should I skip all the fillers from 17-24 or are some of them salvageable?
I see that ep24 still has a good rating, but I don't know which previous eps it requires.
