Monkeys are primates, species among the ranks of the most intelligent kinds of living animals. They are mostly arboreal, but some, such as baboons, live primarily on the ground.
Monkeys may see many uses, ranging from entertainment and subjects of scientific experiments, both of those uses source of many criticism from animal rights groups, to employment as pets or helper animals. They're also subject to religious attention, specially in Eastern cultures.
Humankind has long deemed several species of non-human primates, including many kinds of monkeys, to be intelligent, and more recent scientific experiments have shown that they indeed have highly developed cognitive abilities. This can be seen in their uses as helper animals and in some of their portraits in popular culture, which often show fictional settings where they take over the world.
Science considers monkeys to be different from apes or lemurs, but colloquial usage frequently sees such terms used interchangeably. They are not to be confused with humans.
