For addicts of sumptuous, unrestrained, barbaric Qing Dynasty polychromy and ornamentation. For fans of Ichihara Yuuko’s style (Abeno’s is way toned-down, but his frequent combination of ombre kimonos and flat color is nice). This series is undemanding eye candy.
Until episode 10, I would have said that this was a lovely, but mediocre relative of Natsume Yuujinchou's. Might be wrong, but I don't remember any of the Natsume series covering the specific theme of episode 10. If they did, they did not execute it as movingly. (The other episodes of Mononokean are not as good.)
The series ended as though they expect another season.
