Correctional data were collected from 156 respondents using two stage random sampling methods. Data analyses were carried out using descriptive statistics and Double hurdle model. Result of the first hurdle reveals that out of twelve explanatory variables Sex ,Education, Off/non-farm income, Land size and Improved seed were determine positively whereas Age and Distance from nearest market determine small holders use of inorganic fertilizer negatively. The result of second stage of double hurdle model indicate that, out of twelve explanatory variables Sex, family size and Land size were positively affect extent (intensity) of inorganic fertilizer use whereas Age and Distance of household from nearest market determine use intensity negatively. Therefore, these results implied that there is a room to increase inorgani...

Vegetable production plays important role in poverty improvement through employment generation, improving the feeding behavior of the people, and creating new opportunities for poor farmers. Value chain analysis is a tool that facilitates the investigation of the business operations of industry in terms of new value adding opportunities as well as accessible value adding activities with regards to foundation of factor inputs, primary processing and delivery of the finished product. Structured questionnaires were managed to 150 farmers respondents, 30 tomato traders and 5 input suppliers' members. The data were collected in 2015 from 5 kebeles, a major tomato growing area in the Toke Kutaye district West Shawa Zone of oromia. OLS regeration model was used to analyze the extent of constraints of the tomato value chain by respondents. The major problems confronting tomato value chain were found to be distance from market, own land, tomato yield, and price expectation, While farmers ranked price expectation as their most worrying constraint, of tomato value chain participation decision of Toke Kutaye's farm householders. The paper recommends that interventions in the value chain should be coordinated in a manner as to affect all actors, taking into consideration their specific priority needs.

The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean, percentage, chi-square and mathematical approach data envelopment analysis DEA, econometrics model such as Tobit. Accordingly, DEA identify the average TE, AE and EE of farm households which encounter for 49.5%, 33.7% and 17.4% respectively. Factors affecting the inefficiency of vegetable production were identified using Tobit model. This model confirmed that age of households, education level, land size, access to irrigation, extension contact access to information and pesticide use were significantly affect TE, while age of the household, land size, access to irrigation, extension contact, access to information and pesticide use were factors affect AE of the farm households. Finally EE of the farm ...

Heckman two-step procedure was used to analyse the determinants of participation in vegetables markets and volume of sales during the study period. Probit model shows that education level, distance to nearest market, access to irrigation, use of pesticide and participation in any civic organization significantly affect market participation decision. Further, results from ordinary least squares regression show that sex of household head, land size, distance to farmer training centre, access to irrigation, use of pesticide and participation in civic organization significantly affect the level of market participation of the farm households in vegetable markets. The findings imply that support for female households, improving adult based education, participation in civi...

Interventions were taken by introducing SWC practices. However, the adoption rates of these practices remain below the expected levels in Ethiopia and particularly in the study area. Therefore, this study aims to identify factors affecting adoption and intensity adoption of physical SWC practices in the study areas. A three-stage sampling technique was employed to select 150 sample HHs. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected from primary and secondary sources. Descriptive statistics and a Double hurdle model were used to analyze data. The first stage of the Double hurdle model results showed that sex of HHs, education level, frequency of extension contact, perception on soil erosion problems, family size, and training affect the probability of adoption of physical SWC practices positively and significantly while age affects it negatively and significantly. Age,...
