Weight: 140 lbs. (by approximation)
Eyes: Brown (briefly blonde)
Hair: Brown
History: (Man-Thing
I#2 (fb)) – At his birth, Richard Rory was held
upside down. The doctor prepared to slap his behind but the baby
slipped from
his grip, falling to the floor.
(Man-Thing I#19 (fb) – BTS) – When Rory was young,
his
little sister handed him a broken doll and demanded he fix it but he
couldn't.
(Man-Thing I#4 (fb) – BTS) – At age 23, Rory
worked as a
disc jockey for a small-town radio station in Ohio. When he got a
threatening
note from Fookiller about the blasphemous music he played, he laughed
and read
it aloud on the air then dedicated a George Harrison song to
Foolkiller.
Foolkiller retaliated by blowing up the station tower and then sending
another
note, promising to kill Rory. Rory was fired from his job and his
fiancee, the
station master's daughter, was concerned.
(Man-Thing I#2 (fb) – BTS) – Rory showed up for a
date with
his fiancee in a fright mask and ended up frightening her mother,
giving her a
heart attack. The woman broke up with Rory. Feeling sorry for himself,
Richard
Rory went for a long drive but got lost in the swamps in Florida, out
of gas.
(Man-Thing I#2) – Down on his luck and considering
himself a
loser, Richard Rory prepared to camp in the swamp. He burnt his coffee
and
threw it on an alligator, the animal then attacking him, but Man-Thing
crept
out of the swamp and tossed the creature away, killing it against a
tree. Rory,
bleeding and wounded, passed out, and woke up the next morning with
nurse Ruth
Hart standing over him. Ruth patched Rory up and she'd found him with
rudimentary bandages on him, likely placed by Man-Thing. As she fed him
beans
and franks, Ruth confessed she needed help and that she feared for her
life. Ruth
had been part of a motorcycle gang, the Skull-Crushers, and her
boyfriend, the
leader Snake, had been stealing from the gang but blamed her for it, so
she'd
fled across the country. Just then, the Skull-Crushers found them and
Snake
attacked Rory briefly before running after Ruth into the swamp. Rory
rushed
after him, jumping on Snake's back, but Snake got the upper-hand. As he
hit
Rory, he was struck by his own chain, tossed aside by Man-Thing, and
Snake was
seemingly killed. Ruth realized she had a fresh start in life now.
(Man-Thing I#3) – Having befriended the rest of
the
Skull-Crushers, Rory and Ruth bid them farewell, then Rory ironically
realized
he had never asked for gas and was still stranded, but soon a passing
motorist (F.A.
Schist) gave them a few gallons of gas. Foolkiller killed Darby and
French of
the Skull-Crushers as they passed by and he announced he was seeking to
kill
Richard Rory, Ted Sallis and F.A. Schist, who were all in the area.
(Man-Thing I#4) – Rory and Ruth drove his bus out
of the
swamps. When a car almost hit them, Rory recognized the driver as
Foolkiller
(Ross Everbest). At a local diner, Rory ordered food as he told Ruth
about his
origins. When the man who gave them gas, Schist, came in, Rory assumed
it was
Foolkiller and attacked him, but the real Foolkiller ran a truck
through the
front of the restaurant and kidnapped both Rory and Schist, taking him
back to
his own headquarters, where he planned to kill Rory in front of the
suspended
body of Reverend Mike Pike but Man-Thing arrived, stopping him. The
container
with Pike in it shattered, spilling his corpse out, and a shard of
glass
pierced Foolkiller's neck, killing him.
(Man-Thing I#5) – Rory was frustrated when the man
at the
hotel front desk insisted that he and Ruth pay for two hotel rooms.
Just as
they noticed there was a carnival nearby, Rory witnessed carnival
manager Mr.
Garvey punching tight rope walker Ayla Prentiss. Rory intervened but
Tragg the
strongman hit him. Rory and Ruth took Ayla back near the swamps, where
she saw
the car of her missing love, Darrel Daniel the Clown. When they saw
Darrel
walking in the swamp, they followed him in, but they soon found
Man-Thing
standing over Darrel's corpse. Assuming Man-Thing had killed Darrel,
Rory
chased him away then realized Darrel had been shot. As they struggled
to
realize what was happening, Tragg attacked and fought with Man-Thing
then the
ghost of Darrel appeared, telling them all they would be forced to
relive his
life.
(Man-Thing
I#6) – The ghost of Darrel Daniel created
illusions around the group, stating he was going make Rory, Ruth, Ayla,
Tragg,
Garvey and Man-Thing act out roles from his life. In a childhood scene,
Rory
saw himself as young Darrel with his parents Milo and Zoe. They relived
many
of Darrel's memories, including losing his father, going to a
psychiatrist,
using his millions to make people happy before joining the carnival as
a clown
and his betrayal when he realized the carnival, including Ayla, had
only been
using him for his money. When the ethereal Critics judged that Daniel
should
receive eternal death, Rory argued with them, then Man-Thing fought
back. When
Ayla pleaded for Darrel's soul, the Critics welcomed it to Heaven and
disappeared.
(Man-Thing I#7) – Rory got a job as a disc jockey
at local
radio station WNRV in Citrusville, Florida, working overnight. When he
announced his plan to get an apartment with Ruth, Rory was disheartened
when
she said she wasn't ready for a relationship and Ruth left to return to
St.
Louis and finish school with her parents. With Ayla leaving soon, Rory
realized
he would be all alone in a new small town.
(Man-Thing I Giant-Size#1) – Rory conducted
interviews in Omegaville,
a self-sustaining and energy-free community built near the swamps. He
met with
Paul Benton and Arthur Marshall, and saw the amnesiac Joseph Timms
(Glob) while
asking about recent attacks from the Cult of Entropy and visits by
Man-Thing.
(Daredevil I#113) – Matt Murdock showed up at the
radio
station to ask Rory about the whereabouts of Ted Sallis and Rory
reported
there had been recent deaths in the area. He drove Matt out to the site
of the
Sallis' shack, where they were attacked by Gladiator. Rory tried to run
but
Gladiator knocked him out.
(Daredevil I#114) – Death-Stalker and Gladiator
took
Daredevil and Rory captive, placing them next to the tied-up Candace
Nelson.
Death-Stalker took Candace away then had Gladiator set the cabin on
fire to
kill Daredevil and Rory but the hero woke up and saved the both while
Man-Thing defeated Gladiator. Rory woke up back in Citrusville, not
sure how
he'd gotten there.
(Man-Thing I#11) – Rory camped in the swamp, bored and missing Ruth until he saw
Man-Thing. A black-haired woman rushed by and attacked Rory in a panic
until Man-Thing scared her then Rory kept her calm to get Man-Thing
to retreat. A masked man, calling the woman Sybil Mills, arrived and
grazed her with a bullet. As Man-Thing held off the man, Rory and Sybil
escaped but Rory found his van's tires slashed. Sybil told Rory that she
had been kidnapped from a dance class in Miami
by the men, who called themselves the Demons of Liberation, who had
stopped in the swamp when she'd escaped. Rory treated Sybil's arm then
they returned and found that the Demon had died from his own weapons, and they removed the mask to see a horribly scarred
face beneath. Rory and Sybil fled back to town and rushed in a hotel to
call for help but the Demons followed them. After they fought
Man-Thing again, the Demons surrendered and unmasked, revealing they
were all scarred veterans, including Sybil's brother,
who had staged the kidnapping to try and get Sybil to join them.
(Man-Thing I#12 (fb) – BTS) – Rory helped Mr.
Carver board
up windows to impress Sybil.
(Man-Thing I#12) – Rory took Sybil to the hotel,
bid her
farewell and invited her to listen to him on the radio.
(Man-Thing I#17) – Rory announced on the radio
about the
mayor's convening of a town meeting and he kept getting calls about a
Mad
Viking in town. After hearing that Man-Thing had been killed, Rory grew
emotional and had the receptionist take over. Station owner Mr.
Carpenter was
furious at Rory and demanded it never happen again then he ordered him
to the
town meeting the next day, although Rory wouldn't get any sleep. At the
meeting
the next afternoon, Rory reported on civilian protests by those,
including
Olivia Selby, who demanded greater censorship, and she called the Mad
Viking up
to the stage and they started burning books. Knowing it would cost him
his
job, Rory rushed the stage to put out the fire and the Viking punched
him,
knocking him out. Selby and the Viking then led a riot toward the town
school.
(Man-Thing I#18) – Rory woke up to Mr. Carpenter
firing him then he rushed to the school to see if he could stop the
riot. Rory came across
the body of teacher Mr. Edwards, who had been thrown from a window by
the Mad
Viking. Rory felt helpless, recalling his sister's broken doll from
years
before. Astrid Josefson, the granddaughter of the Viking,
approached Rory and he
convinced her to try to stop her grandfather. When Astrid tried
appealing to
the Viking, he struck her and she was killed, but Selby incited the crowd to participate in a book burning. Man-Thing attacked, covered in
pollution water, and
defeated the Viking, then the crowd dispersed. Rory helped Olivia's
daughter,
Carol, get away.
(Man-Thing
I#19 (fb)) – Rory, with Carol, drove Man-Thing hours away from there, helping him escape.
(Man-Thing I#19) – Rory found Man-Thing had gone
missing in
Georgia. When he woke Carol up, she informed him she was only 17, and
Rory
panicked, realizing he could be accused of kidnapping now. When the Scavenger, who was after Man-Thing,
and Man-Thing broke out in a fight, Rory tried hitting the
Scavenger, but the villain
turned on Rory. Scavenger unmasked then Man-Thing burned his face.
(Man-Thing I#20) – As Scavenger fled, Wilbur
Unger, the
hotel manager, kicked Rory, Carol and Man-Thing out. They entered Rory's van
and began driving but they were soon hit by another vehicle. The van crashed and
Carol's leg was hurt. Man-Thing helped Rory get free then he saw the
other
driver, a demonic man, perish before grabbing a mysterious box and
giving it to
Man-Thing.
(Man-Thing I#20 – BTS) – When the police arrived,
Carol got
medical help and Rory was arrested for kidnapping. He was returned to
Citrusville for trial.
(Iron Man Annual I#3) – Tony Stark, needing
someone who knew
the complexities of Citrusville and the area, reached out to Rory in
jail. Rory
gave him intel on the time Molecule Man had attacked locally and Stark
promised to help him find legal aid.
(Omega the Unknown I#9 (fb)) – While in prison,
Rory
befriended cellmate Greg Salinger and told him about his history.
(Omega the Unknown I#8) – Out of prison, Rory got
off the
bus in New York and greeted Ruth Hart with a kiss, then he met young
James-Michael Starling and Amber Grant. They went to Hell's Kitchen,
where Rory
planned to room with Starling, though Starling himself kept spacing
out. Rory
was then shocked to get a warning note from Foolkiller, telling him he
only had
a day to live.
(Omega the Unknown I#9) – Rory, Amber and Ruth saw
Starling
become suddenly ill, so they called Dr. Barrow, but then Starling was
suddenly
well again. When property manager Guillermo knocked on the door, they
all
panicked, then Salinger arrived dressed as the new Foolkiller,
explaining how
Rory had inspired him to adopt the villainous identity.
(Omega the Unknown I#10) – Amber and Ruth were
upset with
Rory for letting Starling go out for a walk and they soon discovered
Starling
had purchased a bus ticket.
(Defenders I#74) – When Foolkiller wanted to start
a life as
a new revolutionary hero, he connected with Dollar Bill, who took
Foolkiller
west to connect with the Defenders, bringing a reluctant Amber and Rory
along.
Their train nearly struck the Hulk, who picked it up in the air briefly
before
setting it down and jumping away. Rory and the others met Clea,
Valkyrie and
Hellcat of the Defenders, and Foolkiller threatened them, considering
them
fools.
(Defenders I#75) – Foolkiller pointed a gun at
Dollar Bill's
head and forced everyone to sit down as he explained why he considered
them
fools. Foolkiller stunned Valkyrie with a shot then caved in the
ceiling so
that he could hunt them down individually, as the building caught on
fire. Rory,
Amber, Dollar Bill and the Defenders' ally Ledge got out of the
building.
Foolkiller was defeated and the fire engines arrived to contain the
blazes. As
reporter Fia Lundstrom reported events, Nighthawk and Hulk returned and
chaos
hit, causing the team to decide to disband. Rory saw the opportunity to
ask
Valkyrie and Hellcat for help in finding James-Michael Starling.
(Defenders
I#76 (fb) – BTS) – Valkyrie and Hellcat reached
out to the Wasp for help and she arrived to take the group, including Rory and Ruth, along in a Quinjet.
(Defenders I#76) – Rory, Amber, Ruth, Valkyrie,
Hellcat and
Wasp boarded the Quinjet and went looking for James-Michael Starling
and Dian
Wilkins. They began at the origin place of Starling, where they saw an
alien
ship, with Starling fighting off robots with energy blasts. During the
fight,
Rory grabbed an alien gun and struggled to use it. Moondragon appeared
to aid
the heroes, the aliens departed and Starling was suddenly replaced by
Omega
the Unknown.
(Defenders I#77) – Rory went with the others to
Las Vegas,
where the heroes saved Starling and learned the truth about Omega.
Starling
sacrificed himself to save the others and both he and Omega died.
Moondragon
took their forms into space.
(Defenders I#78) – Rory said farewell to his
friends,
determined to begin a new life for himself in Las Vegas.
(Savage She-Hulk I#7) – Rory found a spare casino
token in
the streets and gambled in a slot machine, winning a fifty-thousand
dollar
jackpot. A showgirl and a manager convinced him to bet it on roulette
and he
won a half million. With a new limousine and a fortune, Rory moved to
Los
Angeles to begin a new life. When She-Hulk rushed by in a battle with
the
police, Rory misled the police to let She-Hulk escape then she switched
back
to Jennifer Walters and he asked her on a date the next day. A pile of
dirt
fell on his car then the next day it was stripped for parts, and he
wondered
if his luck was running out. He picked up Jen at her law office and
told her
his life story, then they kissed in the back seat of his stripped-out
limo all
night. After they got breakfast (he tipped a thousand dollars), he
fired his
driver with pay then convinced Jen to go with him to Citrusville to
find
Man-Thing. Upon arrival, Rory wanted to purchase a particular piece of
land
and discovered it was owned by F.A. Schist, who was missing. Rory
bought WNRV,
fired Mr. Carpenter and began broadcasting a search for Schist.
Professor
Slaughter met with Rory, telling him about his search with Schist for
the
Fountain of Youth and how they had come across the remains of
conquistadors
and living ogres in a place called La Hacienda.
(Savage She-Hulk I#8) – At WNRV, Rory interviewed
Todd
Wickham, the former Professor Slaughter, who claimed Schist had been
killed by
purple men after being turned into a monster but Rory had a hard time
believing him and gave him cash anyway. Rory went looking for Jen,
finding her
car abandoned in the swamp, and she soon came back to him, looking
haggard. Rory
told her of his plans to buy the swamp to preserve it for Man-Thing but
he
didn't think he could do so. He kissed Jen, telling her she was the
best thing
that had ever happened to him and then she flew home to Los Angeles.
(Savage She-Hulk I#13 (fb) – BTS) – At WNRV, Rory
intercepted a transmission from outer space but it was weak. He tried
to tell
the locals about it but they were unsupportive so he spent all his
fortune on
upgrading his equipment, causing the FCC to come down on him.
(Savage She-Hulk I#13) – Jen called Rory just as he was
ready to receive his big transmission but she hung up before he could
tell
her about the transmission. Rory then broadcasted his message into space and got in
contact with
Man-Wolf (John Jameson), who shared his origins, now trapped on a far
planetoid.
Rory's equipment overloaded and he wondered how he could help Jameson.
Rory
tried selling the radio station back to Mr. Carpenter for full price
but
Carpenter would only give him $5,000 and he accepted, spending money on
a
ticket to go see Jen in California. Rory knocked on Jen's door, finding
her
distraught as her friend Zapper had just professed his love for her. Zapper Ridge
rushed off heartbroken then Rory gave Jen the necklace she'd left in
Florida,
not realizing that Man-Wolf was actually on a microscopic world in one
of the
pearls.
(Savage She-Hulk I#14) – Rory listened to Jen
lament about
her life as they drank coffee and stayed up until dawn. Zapper's
mother, Mrs.
Ridge, visited, needing Jen's help looking for her son. Rory, unable to
sleep
from the caffeine, went job-hunting.
(Savage She-Hulk I#15) – Jen came home from a date
with
Zapper and yelled at Rory when he asked about it. She later apologized,
inviting Rory to see Dahlia perform at a nightclub.
(Savage She-Hulk I#16) – Rory listened to Jen
lament about
a difficult legal case. When the villain Microwave buffeted the
apartment with
energy, Rory grew ill and left.
(Savage She-Hulk I#17) – Rory had no luck job
hunting. He
found Beverly Cross and a real estate agent in Jen's home and took down
their
information for Jen, leading her to wonder if her father might be
selling her
home. After seeing a villain named Man-Elephant challenge She-Hulk on
television, Rory flirted with Jen but Zapper peeked through the window
and
confronted the lovers. Rory and Zapper nearly broke out in a fight
before Jen
rushed off to comfort Zapper, causing Rory to wonder where he stood.
Rory
packed his bags and left, saying goodbye to Jen. Feeling like a loser,
he
realized he needed to find himself.
(Savage She-Hulk I#19 (fb) – BTS) – Rory realized
he wanted
to stay, so he found a job.
(Savage She-Hulk I#19) – Rory used his key to get
back into
Jen's apartment, where he told her that he had known she was She-Hulk
for a
long time and had been waiting for her to tell him. Just then, a notice
of
eviction, filed by Jen's father Morris Walters, was sent over and Jen
responded with fury, switching to She-Hulk. Zapper arrived and
She-Hulk,
realizing she'd been betrayed by him, violently lashed out at him,
destroying
parts of her own home before storming out, saying she would never trust
anyone
again.
(Savage She-Hulk I#20) – She-Hulk returned home to
find
Zapper and Rory arguing over how to help her. Rory tried appealing to
Jen to
face her problems and to reveal to Morris that she was She-Hulk but she
smashed more furniture and stormed off. Morris Walters showed up and
was
furious to find the place in shambles. To try and make things better,
Rory
revealed to Morris that Jen was She-Hulk but Morris didn't believe him
and
struck Rory in response. Rory left ashamed.
(Savage She-Hulk I#21) – Rory looked for Jen at
her office
but she wasn't there.
(Savage She-Hulk I#22) – After sleeping on a park
bench,
Rory kept worrying over She-Hulk. Later, while searching Jen's office,
he met
Buck Bukowski but refused Buck's offer of help to find Jen. Rory
learned that
Jen kept a picture of him on her desk.
(Savage She-Hulk I#24) – Rory and Zapper, who made
amends,
both showed up at the office of Morris Walters to discuss Jen.
(Savage She-Hulk I#25) – Rory, who was filled with
worry
about Jen, and Zapper helped convince Morris that Jen really was
She-Hulk.
When they got news of She-Hulk on a rampage, they rushed behind Officer
Jones
to find her. They soon arrived to see She-Hulk battling Ralphie
Hutchens, who
could mutate into different forms including Torque, with the help of
Lou Monkton. Torque's emotion-manipulating powers briefly flared and
Rory was filled
with a sense of self-confidence. She-Hulk overcame overwhelming odds,
briefly
turning back into Jen Walters, and Jen took time to break-up with Rory,
telling him she wanted to stay as She-Hulk now, meaning she was staying
with
Zapper. She-Hulk defeated the villain then celebrated.
(Sensational She-Hulk I#36 (fb) – BTS) – Rory
inherited a
vast sum of money from an aunt he had never heard of and became
prosperous. He
dyed his hair blonde.
(Sensational She-Hulk I#36) – On Christmas Eve,
Rory went to
the home of Morris Walters, seeing She-Hulk, Zapper Ridge and his new
wife
Christina, and Louise "Weezi" Mason (the Blonde Phantom).
(She-Hulk II#3) – Rory, sitting between Buck and
Zapper, was
pulled into the Time Variance trial for She-Hulk, along with her allies
from
across the time stream.
(She-Hulk II#20) – When Stu Cicero appeared in the Nexus of Realities, he was scared the Man-Thing might grab him but Rory distracted the swamp creature with rubber squeaky toys. He learned Stu was connected to Jen Walters and offered to drive him back to civilization but Stu just took Rory's car and left him there.
