Jockey Corey Black goes out a winner

INGLEWOOD, Calif. --Corey Black, the nation's top apprentice jockey in 1986, retired Sunday after winning the final race of his career.

Black won the ninth race at Hollywood Park aboard 15-1 longshot Tripp to Albadou for his 1,526th career victory. The winner paid $33.40.

The 31-year-old Black plans to become the agent for jockey Gary Stevens.

Black's biggest career victory was in the 1993 Hollywood Gold Cup with Best Pal. He has long had to battle his weight since winning the first race of his career on Oct. 16, 1985, at Santa Anita.

"It was not a tough decision. Weight is my number one problem," Black said. "I looked at my business, which has come to nil right now. Not that I won't miss riding, but the reward was not worth the risk anymore."

Black finished with 1,526 career victories.
