Akiu quits as Kalaheo coach

Mike Akiu, Kalaheo High's head football coach the past three seasons, has resigned, athletic director Lee Cashman announced yesterday.
Akiu's job as a stevedore did not allow him enough time to do the kind of job he wanted to do, Cashman said. Akiu's teams went 11-14 during his three years, including 0-8 last season. The Mustangs missed the O'ahu Interscholastic Association tournament by one game with a 6-2 record in 2001.
Akiu was an all-state football player and champion track sprinter at Kalaheo and lettered in football at University of Hawai'i from 1982-84. He was drafted into the NFL by the Houston Oilers in the seventh round in 1985 and played professional football for several years, mainly as a kick returner.
Cashman said he would begin accepting applications from head coach candidates immediately, either by mail to the school at 730 Iliaina St., Kailua, 96734, or by telephone 808 254-7914.
